  This Church Sponsored a homeless man that I brought into my Home. I had never done anything like this before. I am 60 years old and have been 100% disabled for 17 years and at the end of my Life. To be frank, I came back to my Hometown after 42 years to die. I have devoted my Life to the DoD and helping others ... never having a Family. At the behest of 2 parishioners, I took Steve Berger in. I could not Register him as a Resident in my Apt. Complex due to Financial and Background Requirements. This put me in jeopardy of losing my Home, but out of sympathy I did it anyway.
  
  It was a 3 month NIGHTMARE dealing with this man ! No one EVER stopped by to check on the situation, nor even attempted to talk to me or call. His 'friends' (Susan & John) who moved him in,and came by to drive him around several times every week, NEVER came in to talk. They never even gave me their phone numbers ... THEY JUST DUMPED THIS PERSON ON MY DOORSTEP !!! I tried to reach the Pastor on several occasions but she was never in, nor would she return my messages. I did speak to Pastor Shannon on 1 occasion (after the 1st month) about the situation. She coldly told me that she does not talk to "OUTSIDERS" (her words) about Church Members. Then Steve became belligerent ... on the verge of violence when he found out that I had spoke to her. If I did not have a Service Dog with me I would NOT have been safe ! I could not involve the Police without getting in trouble with my Property Mgr.
  
  During the 3rd month, I called Shannon again and she rudely told me; "Steve is an adult ... I'm not his Mother !" (her words) and then hung-up on me !!! I felt absolutely TRAPPED in this situation ! A week later I found myself in the ER with a heart attack from the stress. At this point I told Steven Berger that he must go. Then his friend Susan, immediately (within 10 min.) came to my Home and harangued me about it for over an hour ! I had to pack Steve's things myself as he would not. Now, I understand that John K. has found Stevie another apt. in Valpo with financial backing from yet a another Church !
  
  Porter Police have since charged Steve (on my behalf) with Intimidation after I showed them the 15 vulgar & threatening phone messages he left for me after he left. This man is a merely Vagrant ... a BUM, that has not worked almost ALL his life. He slept for 16+ hrs. a day ... when not stalking little girls on the Internet with his phone, or begging on the street and collecting Social Security, however minimal as he never worked. He leached off his Mother until she died and then he was thrown out of her House. He's lived on the streets for over 15 years and apparently is just FINE with it. I found 2 different jobs for him and he turned both down ! I tried SO HARD to get through to this person.
  
  His rent was a give-away ... I could easily have found a NORMAL person to share my 2-Bdr. Apt. with. He feigned illness and LIED ABOUT EVERYTHING ! He was on his phone all the time using different 'Personas' and exploiting people all the time. He was Dishonorably Discharged from the Service, never worked, has been thrown out of every Homeless Shelter in Valpo/ Portage /Michigan City, and has a violent criminal background.
  
  After I finally got Steve to leave, I went to pay my Rent and the Property Mgr. read me the Riot Act and threatened to Evict me ! It seems that Management found out about him as Residents were complaining ... he was panhandling and trying to bum rides from my neighbors ! The WORST of it is that THEY ALL KNEW how Steven Berger is ! Steve claimed Susan and John are his life-long friends !!! Frankly, I'm appalled by the actions of this Church and the irresponsible way they handled this. Their careless efforts at Charity made my life a HELL and almost killed me !!!
  
  This irresponsible and careless 'practice' by this Church is going to end in TRAGEDY some day ... if it hasn't already. I'm just thankful that I'm still around to complain about it. NEVER AGAIN !!! - Vonzant Stoughton
